I’ve lost most of my sight from diabetes and now receive SSD. I would like to take just a few college classes and maybe learn a few things while I have some sight left. Does anyone know if I can get my classes and books paid for? Since having to leave my job I am pretty much low income.

You can get your whole college paid for because you are blind. They also have special grants available. My son shared a dorm with a young man who was legally blind and he got lots of help…he had a pc designed to enlarge text so he could read it…lots of help

Yes, you should qualify for the Pell Grant and financial aid as long as you do not have your bachelor’s degree. I have a friend who got a lot of help going to college to retrain after becoming disabled. In addition, I recommend contacting both the Association of the Blind (sometimes) in your area along with the Office or Department of Vocational and the college’s disabled students’ union or office. The last three places would help no matter if you had your Bachelor’s degree or not. They can provide additional funds for college or retraining. The Office or Department of Rehabilitation’s job is to help train or retrain the disabled on SSD to enter the workforce or re enter it. I will include some resources below.

More than likely you qualify for a grant but you will need to get a FAFSA filled out for that to be determined. There absolutely is financial aide for those who have low income. You must go thru the process to find out for sure if you qualify. Go to your local institution and speak with the financial aide adviser and ask for assistance with applying.
