How do I explain to a potential employer that I’ve been on Social Security disability for the last two years?

social security disability

It was due to major depression mainly, but also some physical problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, gallbladder disease. All the above have been resolved, but I’m afraid that even discussing this could eliminate me (and I’d never be able to prove that). But, I don’t want to lie.

Truthfully, or face dismissal for cause later.

Write it down in a letter, attach it to your resume. I had some problems {legal} that prevented me from even being considered for a position. I wrote a letter explaining the circumstances surrounding my arrest and was very honest and open about it. This seemed to impress the people doing the hiring and I got the job. After working there for several years they told me that they were pleased that I had been honest with them and was one of the best employees ever. So, just sit down and write it out, when you have the time to fully explain your circumstance. Best of luck to you. I am happy that you are doing better. And remember that all of us have issues at some point in our lives.

I hire people and if I read all that, I would steer clear. I hate to sound so rude but it’s the truth. I’m not sure how you could handle it without being dishonest because you will need to explain what you were doing the last two years.
