Has anyone been on Social Security Disability and returned to work for the “trial period” or longer?

social security disability

Social Security Disability has a trial period for people who try to return to work. After that there is a three year period in which they can “sink or swim”. Has anyone returned to work from being on Social Security Disability and if so, how did it work out for you? Did you lose your Disability?

I did. After 20 years on social security disability, I went to work I kept getting my disability check for a year after I started work. That gives you a double income, but be careful not to get too used to the extra cash because it does end after that first year. It also depends on how much you make per month. You can earn a little over $800 a month and never lose your disability benefits. After about 7 years I lost my Medicare coverage, but my job had benefits so that wasn’t a problem. The different things that apply to working with a disability can be very confusing, and if you call the SSA 800 number you will probably get even more confused because the people working the phones really don’t have accurate answers every time you call.
My job was managing a center for independence for people with disabilities so I do have a lot of experience at this.

The down side is that because of budget cuts in California I lost my job two months ago. Now I am unemployed and on state disability. Back to square 1!
